The size of the images for background tiles is very much a question of individual taste. For some backgrounds I like a nice large graphic and for others a small dainty image. I always make my tiles on the large size - then reduce when needed.

It is always better to reduce the tile size - Enlarging is only feasible if you have a very good quality tile to begin with and not generally recommended.

   

The above examples show the same tile - the one on the right has been reduced in size.

Now - Lets Get Started.
You will need:
PSP You can download a 30 day trial copy here.
(You can do this using any Graphics programme
which allows you to change size by inserting
one dimension only.)

Step 1.
Open your PSP programme.
Open your picture file and press the shift and D keys to duplicate your original. It is a good idea to always make a copy like this to work with.

Step 2.
Click the image button on the top tool bar. Select the resize option from the dropdown menu. See illustration A.

Step 3.
Illustration B shows the resize dialogue box. You can change the size by changing the dimension of one side only this is very important. PSP will automatically change the other dimension proportionately. Use the top pixel box if you know what size exactly you would like to change the tile to - or use the percentage boxes below the pixel option. But only change one dimension either the width or the height.

You will need to tick the 'Maintain aspect ratio box' if it is empty.

Step 4.
Whenever you resize a picture in PSP you will need to sharpen the image. Select the effects button on the top tool bar and select sharpen and then sharpen again. See illustration C.

Thats it! your background is now ready to save, name and file for use.
